Sunday Review : 10 Cloverfield Lane

Hello all!
I understand I'm not being very frequent with posts, but bear with me. Here's a review of the pretty awesome 10 Cloverfield Lane

I really like Cloverfield. The film has a lot of fans, and a lot of haters. Personally, I thought it does a very good job of generating fear and horror, and probably the best found footage film since The Blair Witch Project. 10 Cloverfield Lane, is very unrelated to Cloverfield, other than the fact that it's in the same world. I didn't know what to expect coming into this, but it was great.

This film is about a woman played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead who is captured and put in an underground cellar by John Goodman who claims that they can't leave, because the air outside is toxic. The movie is pretty much her trying to find out if this guy is telling the truth, or he's just crazy and the air is fine and she can leave.

10 Cloverfield Lane is not a sequel. It is kind of more like a spin-off, but it's probably best to consider it it's own thing.

The best part of the film is the amazing direction by Dan Trachtenberg, a first time director. The suspense is incredible, you are always on the edge of your seat, and the tension rises throughout the film. A film that is just a few people in a cellar with nothing to do in theory sounds boring, but I wasn't bored for a minute. The next best part is John Goodman. His outstanding performance is what toyed with the audience to where we had no idea what was going on in his mind. We never could tell if he was telling the truth, or he was just insane. Additionally, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, plays a clever hero who is great to root for. The movie kind of puts you in her place, constantly on edge of guessing what is actually going on. The film is really a confined, claustrophobic, thriller that never bores you, and with such little to work with, it is very possible to be boring. It works great.

I have but one con with 10 Cloverfield Lane, and I can't really describe it without spoiling it. So I'll be vague. There was a reveal in the final 30 minutes of the film which felt rushed, and out of place, almost unnecessary. I felt like there was no need to have it there, and the film would just be fine without it. If you have seen the film, you know what I'm talking about. Some people were fine with it, maybe it's just me, but it just felt too rushed.

With excellent creation of tension and suspense, 10 Cloverfield Lane is an outstanding thriller with two great lead performances and an up-and-coming director.

Consensus:
A
