SPECULATION : Jyn Erso is Rey's Mother
Hello all!
Another off-schedule post for the day, but a small fan theory has been floating around recently, due to the new Rogue One trailer. The title says it all, but let's get into this.
Before I start writing this, I want to say that I do enjoy fan theories. I love reading them every now and then, and just wondering if they are true. But they never are. They are usually over complicated and have easily identifiable holes in them. But like I said, they are fun.
Additionally, I hope that this is not true. The interest in Rogue One is largely the causation of the fact that this is a story from the Star Wars world, not relating to the Jedi. It is the first one we have had on the big screen, and I think linking these two kind of ruins all that. The director, Gareth Edwards, specializes in a very specific thing in cinema: showing the sheer size of large objects. He showed this well in Godzilla, and already in the trailer with the Death Star. Therefore, we assume that the story of this grand mission will be portrayed through the perspective of one soldier. It is on a smaller scale than the main Episodes, but still pretty big. So in conclusion, I really don't like when everything has to link together for the sake of continuity, and I would prefer if these Star Wars: Anthology films are their own films, with only mild references to main plot.
After watching the Force Awakens, everyone just wanted to know how Rey's parents are. Considering this is Star Wars, they are more than likely a character that we are already familiar with. Over the past four months since TFA's release, there has been an insane amount of speculation, ranging from characters like Obi-Wan, Luke, Han, and even weirder things. So of course, as soon as we spot a new character, we instantaneously believe that he or she is one of Rey's parents.
And we are doing it again.
Felicity Jones's Jyn Erso debuted in her first scenes yesterday morning in the Rogue One trailer (here for my trailer review and here for my thoughts on the sexism controversy). There is a lot of stuff that would support this theory, but I believe that my argument that Disney is smart enough to not want to largely link this film to the main franchise, trumps all these things. But I still like to talk about Star Wars so let's do it anyways.
First, let's apply logic. Rey was stated to be born 11 years after the Battle of Endor, which takes place four years after A New Hope. Therefore, Rey was born around 15 years after the events of this film. We do not know how old Jyn Erso is meant to be, but Felicity Jones is currently 32. Because most Star Wars characters are simply a few years younger than the actor that portrays them, let's place Jyn at 28 years old. If we use that rough number, that means that Jyn would have to give birth at 43 years of age. It is not a very common age to have a child, but it still is plausible.
Obviously, Rey has the Force, and considering Jyn does not have it, then on the very unlikely chance that this is true, the father would have to be a Jedi. It is unlikely in this scenario that the father would be Luke, because Jyn would be nearly 10 years older than him.
The strongest reason that supports this theory is the personality of Jyn we are already told of. It is very similar to that of Han Solo. A criminal and thief, who still has a correct mind-set. We see in TFA that Rey has absolutely no problem with people like that, as she grows close to Han. This trait rubs off on herself, and she is drawn to that as well. (This is still likely complete nonsense.)(Also there's the reason that there is some sort of resemblance between Felicity Jones and Daisy Ridley, but that's not that important.)
That's about it for right now, but thank you for reading!
