Hello all! This will (likely) be my last time discussing Daredevil in a while, so let's cut to the chase, and finish talking about this stellar season! SPOILERS!!
Episode 13
I enjoyed this finale quite a bit more than last season's finale. I thought the weakest episode of Season 1 was it's finale, however. This episode was pretty great overall, and wraps the season up in a bow, but not a perfect bow, like the previous season did. I had no idea what this finale episode was going to be like, honestly. The only thing that I felt I was certain was going to happen, was the death of Elektra. It was being set-up that the only way to deny The Hand their Black Sky was her meeting the gravestone. Elektra's best scene in the whole season was the conversation she had with Matt in the warehouse, right before the fight that lead to her eventual death. Matt's speech of running away together, doing the thing that makes him feel alive and exhilarates him for the rest of his life, was pretty moving. The final "boss battle" of the season on the rooftop versus Nobu and his ninjas was also amazing, as always. The action choreography was stunning, and Punisher assisting "Red" was awesome to see, possibly hinting that the Punisher and Daredevil may team up sometime down the line. There were a lot of scenes I enjoyed here, namely the Karen scene about writer's block, the Punisher burning his family home, and Stick decapitating Nobu towards the end. It ended on a high note, and makes me so excited for March 2017.
Season 2 Wrap-Up
Season 2 of Daredevil was a worthy "sequel" to the first, near perfect, season. Although I do have a slight preference for the first edition, the second was a solid season. My biggest flaw with the first season was that the audience was not invested greatly into any character except Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock. I believe that the writers realized this, and gave each character their own story arcs, that felt meaningful, while not feeling overstuffed with too many plot lines. Karen and Foggy, who were supposed to be the supporting cast to Matt, were put to much greater use in this season. Karen developing a bond with Frank, helping him in the trial, and nearly resonating with his means of disposing of people, and her scenes with Ellison, had an actual purpose to move the story along, while adding much more depth to her character. Foggy's build-up and eventual outburst of rage against Matt felt like it was one of our own friendships was broken, and in the end getting a high-paying job at Hogarth's firm (sweet cross-over), was a much needed character arc for someone who could've easily been written off as the funny sidekick. Jon Bernthal as the Punisher was absolutely fantastic, making you truly feel bad for a mass murderer. This guy was brilliantly emotional, and I knew from his announcement that he could pull this off. Episode 4 was his best display of acting, and it is probably what made it my favorite episode of not only this season, but the whole series so far. Elodie Yung as Elektra was also great, creating the "BDSM" sort of relationship with Matt, and let the season have not only one interesting plotline, but three or four of them. Season 2 always keeps you guessing, unlike the first season, and that's what I loved so much about it. There were hardly any times were any of my predictions actually turned out to be the direction the show went. Also, I can't go without mentioning the tremendously well done action sequences in this show, namely the stairway fight in Episode 3. I rewatched that fight two or three times now, just to experience it again. It is honestly one of the best action scenes I have ever seen. My favorite scene in the season is probably still a character moment, which is the beautifully moving cemetery monologue done by the Punisher was perfect. Instead of having a monster of a main villain like Season 1's Wilson Fisk, this season had two anti-hero characters, that both influenced Matt's philosophy, while also having us question what it truly means to be a hero. I am still thinking to myself if the Punisher is a hero or not for doing what he does, and the same with Elektra. Overall, this season faltered a bit in it's final episodes, but is still a fantastic season of a fantastic show, filled with expansions on side characters, while moving the plot of the entire show along nicely.
Verdict :
A
