Hello all!
This is the third part of my Marvel movie rankings. If you have not read the first two parts they should be in the blog archive. WARNING : Spoilers! (Note : Lots of X-Men incoming)
12. Deadpool
The hype for this movie was absolutely ludicrous, and rightfully so! The promotional videos, trailers, posters, billboards, and just about everything surrounding the marketing of this movie was great. I got a bit worried, because when the expectations are so high, it is likely that the movie could be a little disappointing.
And it was. But it's still a damn good time.
Ryan Renolds is perfect as this character, and you can just see it. He is so excited to play this character and it really shows. Also, T.J. Miller was my favorite part of this movie, and he was hilarious. I wish he was in the movie for a bit longer though.
When I saw this film opening weekend, the crowd was great. Everyone was laughing and just having a fun time at the movies, which is always a nice sight to see. If you haven't noticed yet, this movie is real funny, but there are some flaws with it, and I will get into that soon. But the action was great, the fourth wall breaks were great, the leads were great, and the crude humor really worked. I have two major issues with Deadpool. One is it's runtime. This movie is painfully short, and I was really expecting more. It's only an hour and forty minutes, which is short for a big budget action film. Also, I was just kinda hoping it was a bit funnier. Towards the second half it kinda fell of in the humor. Still, I saw Deadpool twice, and I would be willing to watch it again, because you just have a great experience with this.
11. Ant-Man
You know comic book movies have gotten huge (no pun intended) when the Ant-Man movie makes hundreds of millions of dollars. Contrasting Deadpool, my expectations for this movie were very low. The trailers looked okay, but nothing too special.
Ant-Man just shows that Marvel has what it takes to make any hero into a blockbuster. It's funny, action-packed with exciting "tiny" sequences, well-acted, and is just the "small-scale" (pun intended) off-beat Marvel movie that was needed after all the hype of Avengers : Age of Ultron had died out.
The four leads in this movie were all great in their own ways. Paul Rudd, playing our hero, is an emotional, relatable, and likeable character and he was great in this role. Michael Douglas, playing the OG Ant-Man, Hank Pym, is as excellent as he is in all the films he is in, and it's nice to see older actors take an interest in the comic book genre. Evangeline Lily, everyone's second favorite elf (Legolas, c'mon), is also great and the set-up for her to play the Wasp in a sequel was handled nicely. Michael Peña was kind of a stand-out here. The entire theater of children, teens, adults and everyone in between was just laughing when Peña went on about his cousin.
I have two flaws with Ant-Man. It's villain is plain boring. Yellowjacket is just another throw away Marvel villain with no purpose. Also, it feels very generic to other Marvel movies, as it uses the formula that many fans are used to by now. I still had a great time watching Ant-Man and can't wait to see what stuff he brings to the table in Civil War.
(Note : prepare for the X-Men)
10. X-Men
9. X-2
I swear these two aren't near each other on purpose. (Same with the next two!). These two movies pretty much sparked the interest in comic book movies. If it were not for these two movies, we probably would not get any of the other films on this list. I am going to kind of gloss over these two very quickly, because it has been a while since I have seen them. Both are very similar, so applying to the both of them : both have great mutant filled action, fantastic performances, namely Hugh Jackman, surprising everyone as the Wolverine, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellan. The ensemble cast worked well and I felt as if all the X-Men that were used, were utilized well. Ian McKellan and Hugh Jackman were the standouts, portraying their character to near perfection. I preferred X-2 a bit more, simply because it is more entertaining and I would rather watch it again.
8. X-Men : Days of Future Past
7. X-Men : First Class
After this franchise went through the dark ages of X-Men : The Last Stand and X-Men Origins : Wolverine, a new fire was introduced with these two films. With an all new Wolverine-less cast in First Class, it proved that this franchise can function without Jackman playing his iconic role. Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and especially Michael Fassbender are fantastic in this film, and in my opinion are all better than their original franchise counterpart. More than just action, these two films provide an interesting narrative, due to a stellar script, about how our society views people who are different than the norm. There is large societal commentary about racism, similar to the X-Men comics, and it is subtle, but executed brilliantly. The time travel aspect of Days of Future Past was fun to see, and Quicksilver just stole the spotlight in every scene he was in. There is no glaring flaw with either of these films, but I personally found First Class to be a little more enjoyable. If I had to nitpick one flaw it would be under utilized X-Men. There were loads of them in these two moies, and I felt like some of them did not really serve a purpose. Also, in DOFP, Peter Dinklage was a pretty weak villain, unlike Kevin Bacon, who was fantastic.
Wow. All done with the X-Men franchise!
6. Iron Man
It's hard to believe that it has been almost 10 years since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began. I saw this move when I was 7 years old in theaters. It started it all, and remains one of the best superhero movies made. Without Jon Favreau's vision back in 2008, we would not have Civil War coming out in only a matter of weeks. We would not have Black Panther and Ant-Man on the big screen.
Tony Stark is introduced as the "likeable asshole" and continues to be that way throughout the course of this film. But I really love what Marvel has done with the character. In Iron Man, he is just himself. In Iron Man 2, he begins to realize his selfishness, and lack of appreciation for his father. In Iron Man 3, he is having terrors of what happened in The Avengers and as it haunts him, and fuels his drug problem. In Avengers : AOU, he realizes the consequences of his actions, and how they can harm others. And now, in Civil War, he is taking a stand that he is not the person to protect everyone. It is a multi-film development, which is why Tony Stark in the MCU is one of my favorite characters.
Coming back to this film, do I even need to say that Robert Downey Jr. is great? Well, he is. He embodies this role like nobody else and is born to play it. He is charming, selfish, and a badass. The aerial action scenes, combined with the science scenes make this movie so good. It's one of these films that even non comic book fans can enjoy. Like all Marvel movies following, the script is absolutely hilarious and action-packed. The witty writing is what really brings this movie all together. If I had to nitpick one flaw, it would be the last 15 minutes are lackluster compared to the rest of the film.
The top 5 are going to be released TODAY! I apologize for the late post! It should have been yesterday, but I had a stuff to do for school. Thank you for reading, and be ready for the final five in a few hours.
