Sunday Review : Daredevil Season 2 : Episodes 1-3

I don't really watch that many TV shows, and I don't intend to write about them that often, but alas, for MCU TV shows I must make an exception. Let's get into the first three episodes of Daredevil Season 2 (spoilers from Season 1 and the first three episodes of Season 2!)

(Note : I wrote each of these after seeing each episode)

Episode 1 : Bang

I loved the first season of Daredevil. Like really freakin' loved it. It showed how good superhero television could be, and is easily the best season any superhero show I have seen so far (only close one is the first season of Jessica Jones). This season got me really hyped up, but I did not watch a single trailer for this. All I knew was that Jon Bernthal was the Punisher, and Elektra is supposedly in it. That's all I knew coming into this.

Now the first episode. This episode is substantially better than the pilot of the show, which remains the worst episode of the show, in my opinion. It reintroduces us to all the characters, gives us an idea of how they are doing, and sets up for how the season will look to be. The dynamic between Matt, Foggy, and Karen still works very well, and it is one of my favorite things about Daredevil : likeable characters. The introduction to the Punisher. Now that is how to kick off a season. He is badass, and he is intimidating. Daredevil could not stand a chance to this guy in their first fight, which I was very surprised it happened in the first episode. It took us almost an entire season to get the first fight with Fisk and Daredevil, but the first episode, the Punisher takes the fight to Matt.

I am also pleased to see that Foggy is very concerned for his friend. I feel as if in other superhero shows, everyone just is cool with everybody being a superhero, and nobody is concerned about the safety of their friends and family. It also brings up an interesting dynamic with Karen and Foggy, due to the fact that Karen does not know about Matt's, uhm, nightly activities.

Also, the day life of Nelson and Murdock is very fun to watch, seeing how their business took off after word got out that a private law firm took down the monster that was Wilson Fisk.

Overall, this season started off with a "Bang" and it looks to be as astounding as the first.

Episode 2 : Dogs to a Gunfight

Wow. Foggy is a badass.

My favorite Foggy moment in all of the show so far happened in this episode, when he absolutely destroyed the DA Reyes with his "Legal Kung Fu", which I thought was lacking from the first season. There was only two episodes where I felt as if the law background of Nelson and Murdock actually meant anything : the pilot and the episode in court. This episode had lots of it, and it was great.

This episode overall felt very similar to the first one, following similar beats, and was still largely exposition. Also, I liked how the name "The Punisher" was finally said, although it was very cringey if you are familiar with the character. Jon Bernthal has just been great so far, and we are only two episodes in! The scene where he is in that shady shop to buy guns and a police radio, shows how he has a moral code, even though we may not all agree with it.

I also enjoyed the whole situation with DA Reyes and using Grotto as bait for the Punisher. It nicely set up another fight between Daredevil and Punisher, and that is always fun. Unfortunately, Daredevil got his ass beaten again.

Judging by the way the episode ended, how Matt was in chains, it looks like the promotional image of Matt tied up to a building with chains is going to be in the following episode. This episode's highlight was the moment where Foggy defended Grotto's rights, over the fantastic fight between Matt and Punisher. Also, the episode starts and ends with Foggy attempting to save Matt after getting obliterated by The Punisher, which is just proof of how much I love Foggy in this show. The courage he gets when things revolve around Matt is very admirable and shows how much Matt means to him. He's proven that he is more than just comic relief!

Overall, I enjoyed this episode a bit more than the first, but still not nearly as good as some of the episodes from the first season. We are only two episodes in though!

Episode 3 : New York's Finest

Wow.

I was nearly speechless when this episode came to closure. It was intense, precise, breathtaking, and contains an action sequence which tops Season 1's hallway fight.

Many people were wondering coming into this season if it will have an action scene like Season 1's hallway fight. I think this puts all discussion to an end, because this was some the best action I have ever scene in a TV show. It reminded me a lot of Keanu Reeves in John Wick. Watching Daredevil battle his through multiple flights of stairs, brawling it out with multiple members of the Dogs of Hell was an exhilarating experience.

Also, more great Foggy moments when he broke the fight between the two criminals in the hospital with his words. It was a true display of his character and just shows why I love Foggy so much.

In any other episode, this would be the highlight. Too bad the most intense action sequence yet was in this one, but the conversation between Matt and Frank on the rooftop was written so well. Both of them have excellent lines and points, and you can agree with both their philosophies. The dialogue was outstanding and the threat of killing Grotto added so much to the depth of Matt.

This was easily better than Episode 1 and 2, and comparable to the best of season 1!

Thank you for reading! I will be back with the next 3 (or more?) episodes next Sunday along with Batman v Superman and MAYBE 10 Cloverfield Lane if I get around to watching it.
