A little extra post for the day, simply because I can and I want to. Sorry for the overwhelming Marvel talk, it's what I love!
So Marvel has their "Phase 3" of films pretty stacked now with 14 films that are announced and starting production. That's pretty big, considering there have been 11 films in Phase 1 and Phase 2 combined. I hope that this does not mean Phase 3 is the end of the MCU! But in those 14 Marvel bonanzas, three untitled films in 2020 lurk. So of course, speculation commences!
So in case you are unaware, here is the official list for the Phase 3 Marvel film releases :
2016
- May 6, 2016 – Captain America: Civil War
- November 4, 2016 – Doctor Strange
2017
- May 5, 2017 – Guardians of the Galaxy 2
- July 27, 2017 – Spider-Man
- November 3, 2017 – Thor: Ragnarok
2018
- February 16, 2018 – Black Panther
- May 4, 2018 – The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1
- July 6, 2018 – Ant-Man and the Wasp
2019
- March 8, 2019 – Captain Marvel
- May 3, 2019 – The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2
- July 12, 2019 – Inhumans
2020
- May 1, 2020 – Unannounced
- July 10, 2020 – Unannounced
- November 6, 2020 – Unannounced
Pretty stacked am I right? So the purpose of this post is to decipher what are the possibilities for these three mystery movies.
Very Likely
Guardians of the Galaxy : Volume 3
2014's smash hit, Guardians of the Galaxy, will have it's sequel Guardians of the Galaxy : Volume 2 released next year. I have no doubts that the success will not be duplicated from it's predecessor. And of course, in Hollywood, you can't have just two. You gotta make it three. 2014 and 2017 are three years apart, so it is highly likely that the next film in the franchise will be released in 2020. We have to remember though, that the reason that these 2020 films are not announced yet is because either 1) they aren't finalized, or 2) they reveal some important information. So Marvel is just playing it safe that if GotG 2 is a bomb, they don't have to feel obligated to make another (let's be real though, that isn't happening.)
That is in my opinion the only lock for one of these slots.
Possibly?
(Rebooted)Spider-Man 2
So the world finally got to feast it's eyes on Tom Holland's Spider-Man suit in the new MCU reboot. And when the whole Marvel/Sony Spider-Man fiasco occurred a few months back, the solo Spider-Man film was set to be released in 2017. So using the same logic as GotG, the sequel will follow three years later, in 2020. However, I don't think this is a lock. The large amount of the public still attach Andrew Garfield with Spider-Man, and need some time to warm up to the new kid in town. So there's a chance that this may be the only Spider-Man movie we get, and the character will web swing his way into other MCU films, or maybe even the Netflix world, because he does live in New York.
Guardians of the Galaxy Spin-Offs
So James Gunn, director and co-writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, said he is very open and is considering some ideas for different spin-offs of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think that this is an awesome idea, because the cosmic world is so vast, and has so many different stories to tell. I think that one of these slots, particularly the July slot, because usually the heavy hitter will release in May, has a decent chance of being a spin-off. Now what this spin-off can be, well, that's a whole 'nother speculation post. But my best guesses are a Rocket and Groot film, lead by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, or maybe introducing the character of Nova into the world. Many people think that Adam Warlock, a character confirmed to be introduced in GotG 2, can maybe get his own film. If a spin-off is one of those slots, it is unlikely that the GotG 3 film will be in the same year, due to exhaustion from the same realm of the MCU.
Doctor Strange 2
So Doctor Strange is the new MCU hero that I am excited for the most. I love Benedict Cumberbatch, he does great stuff in Sherlock, the Hobbit franchise, and The Imitation Game, and the mystical aspects of the Marvel world have yet to be explored. His film is actually next in line after Civil War. It is actually only seven months away, so a trailer will likely be dropping sometime soon. Considering it is releasing in 2016, you would think the sequel would come out in 2019, the normal three year wait, right? Nope. It's not there. But my best guess is, Marvel is waiting to see the public perception of the character. If it's negative to okay, he will likely be a one and done solo film character, and will make his appearance in only Avengers films, kind of like The Hulk. But if it is something like the reception of Guardians of the Galaxy, then I can guarantee that Marvel will unveil one of the titles to be Doctor Strange 2.
Unlikely, but would be cool
The Defenders
So with two seasons of Daredevil out now, one season of Jessica Jones finished, and another coming soon, and the Luke Cage and Iron Fist shows in the near future, The Defenders have become pretty hot properties in the past year. Marvel has stated many times that they want to keep these street-level heroes on the smaller screen, and have the fantastical big CGI mushes on the big screen, but if the popularity of these characters continues to grow, maybe they may consider taking these guys to Hollywood. So far, both characters have been outstanding, and I think it can only get better from here.
Possibly?

Black Widow
People love Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, that's pretty obvious. Lots of people have been encouraging and begging Scarlett to ask Marvel to make her own film. I think it's pretty unlikely, because she works pretty well as a side character, aiding the main characters every now and then, as shown in Captain America : The Winter Soldier. Marvel has talked about this, and they haven't denied it, but personally, I just think it isn't happening.
Blade (Rebooted)
So I actually have not seen any of the Blade films, but Marvel still owns this property. Wesley Snipes has stated that he was in negotiations to reprise his role as the vampire hunter, but it is still very early talks. I think with the mystical elements of the MCU being introduced in Doctor Strange, vampires aren't that far off. I think this is possible, but the character is just a risky move.
Thanks for reading, there should be another post tomorrow!
