My Top 5 Favorite Characters from the Star Wars Universe
Hello all!
I have already done today's Trailer Talk but, I wasn't really satisfied with that post so I wanted to do another one of these fun Top 5 or Top 10 lists. In the light of the Blu-Ray release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, here's my personal Top 5 Favorite Star Wars Characters. Note : This is solely taken from the seven Star Wars films. (Spoilers from all Star Wars movies but c'mon you've seen them by now.)
Honorable Mention : Kylo Ren
This list was pretty hard to make compared to all the others I have made, so I have to have at least one honorable mention this time around. And that mention belongs to none other than the most badass Knight of Ren around, Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo. This guy is a total badass in the Force Awakens, and his menacing presence is what made the movie so much better. In every scene he was in he stole the show. He reminded us of the feeling of Darth Vader, while still feeling like a reckless child. But contrasting Darth Vader, you can feel the human side of Kylo. When he takes off his mask, a whole new character depth is brought when you realize, that he's just a guy. When you discover his intentions, you can understand why he does what he does, but you don't really condone his actions. There is still so much more to be explored about Kylo Ren in Episode 8 and 9, but this guy made an incredible showing in Episode 7, that he had to be on here somewhere. The scene where he impales his father, Han Solo, with his lightsaber was tremendously acted by Adam Driver, and was incredibly emotionally investing. To live up to the expectations of Darth Vader, considered to be one of the greatest movie villains in history, is an impossible feat, and Kylo Ren gives Vader a run for his money.
5. Obi-Wan Kenobi
The original Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi was the father that Anakin never had, and he felt like a father to all young viewers watching the prequels. Old Obi-Wan in Episode 4 was cool and all, but he takes center stage in the prequels. I am not the biggest fan of these films, but I am not their biggest hater either. But easily one of my favorite parts of Episodes 1, 2, and 3 was Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. His performance was one of the saving graces, and as stated previously, he played the role of a father to Anakin. My favorite lightsaber battle in the entire series is in my least favorite film of the franchise, The Phantom Menace. The battle of Darth Maul versus Qui Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi is easily the best and my favorite, complete with excellent stunt work done by all three actors and John Williams' excellent theme "Duel of Fates". His ability to play the voice of reason to Anakin's growing insanity across the course of the prequels is what adds to his charm, and earns him a spot here. Also, the final duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan was heart wrenching, watching him having to fight someone he loves, and being forced to leave him for dead. It is amazing to see how much Obi-Wan developed from a padowan who wanted nothing to deal with young Anakin, to a Jedi Master who all of the council members trust with their lives, and formed a bond with the boy he didn't want to associate with, to the wise old man hobbled up in his own cave, offering wisdom to the young Skywalker along his journey.
4. Darth Vader
The original vile being of the galaxy, Darth Vader is one of the most recognized characters in all of cinema. And there's a reason for that. As soon as he walks a scene with the Imperial March playing, you feel his presence and it just feels like someone important is about to walk here. His is a force (no pun intended) to be reckoned with that the entire galaxy is trying to bring down. In the final scene of Return of the Jedi, we see how he actually cares for his son, and will not let Palpatine simply just kill him. Everything that needs to be said about how Darth Vader is probably the greatest movie villain of all time has already been said. He's terrifying, he's a badass, and the story of how he got to this position, all be it not executed well, has a very good lore behind it. He turned to the dark side to save his dying wife, but he enjoyed himself a bit too much.
3. Rey
I already explained why I love Daisy Ridley as Rey so much in my "Why Force Awakens is my Favorite Star Wars Movie" post, but I'm just gonna summarize all of it. She is my favorite protagonist of any Star Wars movie, and was so well developed in a film that also had to develop Finn, Kylo, and numerous other new characters. Her inner dilemma of wanting to go back to Jakku no matter what because she thinks that her family is coming back is very relatable, and has character traits that are inspiring for all young viewers. For a first time actress, Ridley's work exceeded all expectations. You would think that she is incredibly experienced, but this is her first feature film, and she is marvelous. Her fight sequences are incredible and the way she is like an apprentice to Han was nice to see. Check the other post if you want more on why Rey is a total badass.
2. Han Solo
This is a pretty common number one for many Star Wars fans, and I can't disagree. Han Solo is the original likable jerk who you can't help but like, even though he is kind of an ass. His relationship with Leia is probably my favorite on-screen film romance of all time, and his relationship with Chewy is #friendgoals. His doubts about the existence of the force in Episode 4, and him completely being stupefied by Episode 7 was a great character arc. Han Solo is also seen as the comic relief for Star Wars, and he does it well. Harrison Ford is hilarious as Han with lines like "Laugh it up, fuzzball", and his dynamic with Chewy is great. Also, being a cheap pilot in the Mos Eisley Cantina to becoming a hero of the entire galaxy is one hell of a ride that he took. I am excited to see what Phil Lord and Chris Miller will do with a Han Solo spin-off film.
1. Yoda
I was thinking for a long time between Han Solo or Yoda, on which is my favorite character. Obviously I settled on the greatest Jedi to ever live. Yoda is one of Star Wars' biggest mysteries, with having hardly and origin story of how he came to be. In his council days, his sage-like persona had him be the Council leader. His quirky way of speaking combined with his peculiar look and feel makes for one very unique character, that audiences still have not seen anything like. Yoda in his old-age is also really freakin' funny. While training Luke, some of the little things that you don't notice the first time around are really hilarious if you pay attention. Also, his lightsaber fight with Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones is one of my favorites. His ninja moves are just so awesome. I have a slight preference for the practical effects Yoda, but the CGI Yoda from the prequels is pretty cool too. I really wish that he didn't die in Return of the Jedi, but I understand why he had to, for the sake of the plot's movement at a steady pace. C3-P0 and R2-D2 are the characters that exists throughout the entire Star Wars timeline, but I really wish that that character was Yoda.
Thank you for reading! Expect some more Star Wars stuff in the days to come!
